Antonio Chamizo Biography

Antonio Chamizo Portrait. Picture: José Fernández

Antonio began his dance studies at the Fuengirola Cultural Centre in Malaga (Casa de la Cultura de Fuengirola) and later moved on to the Ballet Clásico de Badajoz. He further developed his studies in Madrid, at the Centro Internacional de Danza de Madrid, under the direction of Carmen Roche, working also with other teachers there, such as Gonzalo Zaragoza or Lázaro Carreño. Antonio graduated both at Madrid’s Royal Conservatory for Professional Dance (Real Conservatorio Profesional de Danza de Madrid) and at the British Royal Academy of Dance.

During his training, Antonio performed with the company dDT (de Danza Teatro) 1995-1998. In 1998, and after completing his training, he joined the Carmen Roche Youth Ballet (Joven Ballet Carmen Roche), moving on to Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern in 2000. Now as a soloist, he performed with Introdans 2001-2004 and then, from August 2004 to July 2006, with the Ballet des Saarländischen Staatstheaters.

He has danced pieces choreographed by Renato Zanella, Daniel Ezralow, David Parsons, Jirí Kylián and William Forsythe, among others. And featuring among the roster of choreographers he has worked with are names such as Ton Wiggers, Robert Battle, Marguerite Donlon, Nils Christe, Karole Armitage, Christian Spuck, Patrick Delcroix and Hans van Manen.

At the close of the 2005-2006 season, he decided to focus on further developing his teaching skills. He therefore combined his role as teacher—both at the “Mariemma” Real Conservatorio Profesional de Danza and at the “Carmen Amaya” Conservatorio Profesional de Danza—with teacher training, studying for a Higher Degree in Dance (Título Superior de Danza, specialising in Classical Dance Pedagogy), as well as doing a Masters in Performing Arts. In November 2011, he took a teaching position at the “María de Ávila” Conservatorio Superior de Danza.

Since the beginning of his teaching career, he has worked as guest teacher in such renowned companies as Wayne McGregor Random Dance, Sadamatsu-Hamada Ballet, DV8 Physical Theatre, Introdans, Compañía Nacional de Danza (CND), under the direction of José Carlos Martínez, and Ballet Nacional SODRE, under the direction of Julio Bocca and where he became a member of the artistic team.

On invitation, he has also talked at numerous conferences, has given master classes and has taught advanced teacher training courses, as well as international seminars. He has also sat on judges’ panels at different dance competitions and events.

Now, for the 2018-2019 season, he has joined the artistic team at the Compañía Nacional de Danza as Assistant Art Director.
