GISELLE PAS DE DEUX. Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot

CND REPERTOIRE

  • (Extracts from act II)
  • Choreography: Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot, adapted by José Carlos Martínez
  • Music: Adolphe Adam
  • Duration: 17 minutes
  • World premiere by Ballet de l' Opéra de Paris on June 28th, 1841 at Palais Garnier, Paris (France).
  • Premiere by Compañía Nacional de Danza on October 18th, 2013 at Teatro Guerra, Lorca (Spain).
  • A masterwork of romantic ballet, Giselle was created in 1841, at the Paris Opera, with choreography by Coralli and Perrot. Although it disappeared from the Paris Opera's repertory in 1868, French ballet masters working in Russia preserved and preformed Giselle (namely Jules Perrot first and then Marius Petipa). Giselle was danced again in Paris in 1910 by Diaghilev's Ballets Russes.

Albrecht, who has come to lay lilies on the tomb of his beloved sees the white image of the young lady arise; a ghost he wishes to catch but who escapes him unceasingly. At night, the woods are taken over by the Willis, the spirits of brides jilted by their grooms before the wedding. Giselle has become one of them. A fatal destiny awaits Albrecht, but Giselle, who has pardoned his betrayal, saves him from the power of the Willis, just at the break of dawn.
