This Nutcracker pas de duex by José Carlos Martínez, for the Compañía Nacional de Danza, is a taster of a production of the complete Nutcracker ballet to be premiered in 2018.
The original Nutcracker premiered on 17 December 1992, in Saint Petersburg’s Mariinsky theatre. Choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, the libretto was the joint work of Ivan Vsevolozhsky and Petipa himself and the music is by Piotr I. Tchaikovsky. The origins of the Nutcracker tale lie in the storybook by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King"(1816). Yet the story that would later give birth to the Tchaikovsky ballet derives from an adaptation of Hoffmann’s text by Alexandre Dumas (father).
With this premiere of The Nutcracker pas de deux from Act II, José Carlos Martínez begins his homage to a dancing legend and genius on the bicentennial celebration of his birth (Marius Petipa was born in March 1818). Petipa’s art is characterised by its technical discipline, its richness of resource and its subtle sense of elegance.
