CND - PROMO #CND40anniversary

Compañía Nacional de Danza (CND) was  founded in 1979 as an independent organ of the National Institute of Performing Arts and Music (INAEM). CND has spent 40 years dancing around the world and contributing to dance history. During that time it has staged works by national and international choreographers, combining renowned contemporary pieces with both neoclassical creations and works from the classical ballet repertoire. Looking back on 2018, we attracted over 20,000 spectators to our performances of The Nutcracker—the second major classic taken on by the CND under the direction of José Carlos Martínez. And now we are primed to celebrate 2019; an intense year for us, as we will be celebrating four full decades of history.

The performances lined up to mark our 40th birthday kick off 8-13 February in Lyon, where, at the magnificent Maison de la Danse, our dancers will stage our smash hit, Don Quixote.

Then, in March, we will be touring a programme of Spanish choreographers (staging: Abolutio, by Altea Núñez; Jián, by Iratxe Ansa and Igor Bacovich; Odila, by Mario Bermúdez and the emblematic Por vos muero, by Nacho Duato). Tour venues will include the Teatro Circo in Albacete, as well as renowned stages in Germany, such as Graf-Zeppelin-Haus (Friedrichshafen) and Theater Bonn (Bonn).

Among the absolute musts for 2019 is the celebration of the bicentenary of the Prado Museum, to take place on the International Dance Day. The event involves the CND putting on various dance performances simultaneously at different spaces throughout the art gallery on 28 and 29 April. Just days earlier, we will stage Johan Inger’s Carmen at the Teatro Colón de Bogotá (Colombia).

Following the CND’s tour of France in May this year (a double bill, combining Una noche con Forsythe with Carmen), the CND will land on the Sala Roja, at the Teatros del Canal, to perform Forsythe’s programme (The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude, Artifact Suite, Enemy in the Figure). Straight after that, the company takes its Don Quixote to the Teatro Principal in Palma de Mallorca, 15-16 May.

On 6 July, the CND once again performs at Granada’s Festival de Música y Danza, with a varied programme, including the premier of El Sombrero de Tres Picos, by Manuel de Falla/Léonide Massine, just after that we will travel to Paris to settle for the period 8-17 July at Mogador Theater with Johan Inger's Carmen.

Then, as its grand finale, the CND will return to the Teatros del Canal on 26, 27 and 28 July, to celebrate its 40th BIRTHDAY GALA with a program which proves the evolution that CND has experienced during these 40 years of history. Nacho Duato will be present through his Por vos muero, premieres of Cayetano Soto's L'après-midi d'un faune and Andonis Foniadakis' Les Noces will show the versatility of our dancers and finally, Don Quixote Suite by José Carlos Martínez will give us the opportunity to invite some fo the guests artists we have had during the last years together with the wonderful dancers of CND.

As well as all its tours and programmes, the CND remains full on this year with its “CND Residencies” creative residencies, as well as its educational programme, which includes the participation of people and groups experiencing social exclusion.

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE COMPANY

Compañía Nacional de Danza was founded in 1979 under the name of Ballet Clásico Nacional (Ballet Nacional Clásico) with Víctor Ullate as its first Director. His successors in the post were María de Ávila and the extraordinary Russian ballerina Maya Plisétskaya. Then, in 1990, Nacho Duato was named Artistic Director of the company.
Duato’s appointment brought innovative change to the company. Up to his departure in 2010, he contributed forty-five choreographic works, praised by critics worldwide.
After one year under the artistic direction of Hervé Palito, the Compañía Nacional de Danza appointed a new Artistic Director, José Carlos Martínez. He took office on September 1st, 2011, after leaving his post as Principal Dancer from the Paris Opera Ballet.
José Carlos Martínez's project for the Compañía Nacional de Danza was to promote dance and to make this art form better known. His repertory was wide, ranging from classical and neoclassical ballet to modern choreographic language, within a setting of full artistic and creational freedom. It embraced both new Spanish and international creations, drawing in new audiences and boosting the company's national and international projection.
