Repertoire
The Nutcracker
A great classic production to celebrate the CND's 40th anniversary. Ballet in two acts.
- World premiere by: Compañía Nacional de Danza at Baluarte, Pamplona (Spain), October 26th 2018
Consciousness and unconsciousness go together hand in hand in this new production of The Nutcracker. Here, the CND embraces the worlds of childhood and adulthood as if they were communicating vessels in which reality and fantasy mix intimately. The narrative is based on Marius Petipa’s libretto—in turn inspired by Alexandre Dumas’ adaptation of the fairytale penned by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann. All conspires in this new performance to transport us to a magical universe bursting with dreams, longing and fantasy.
“After eight years of work and the success achieved with Don Quixote, our first classical production for 25 years, the National Dance Company returns to stage another of the great titles of the classical repertoire, The Nutcracker. Based on the libretto of Marius Petipa, inspired in turn by the story by E.T.A Hoffmann, (adapted by Alexandre Dumas), this story for children and adults floats between two worlds: dreams and reality, the conscious and the unconscious, childhood and adulthood We have placed the action in the time of 1910, accentuating the contrast between the bourgeois realism of a family party, and Clara’s imagination, where her desires coexist with her fears, wonderful images with much more disturbing or fantastic ones. The narrow border. between the real world and that of fantasy allows the viewer to be transported to a magical universe through which they will travel through the memories of their own story.”
