Patrick Bana's main source of inspiration to create Nightsongs was a folkloric Arabic poem. Love, sadness, hate, madness, they all are emotional branches of our vital experience, which builds relationships between us and others: our friends, our lovers... However, we start and end in loneliness. And it is there where we find our truth, the one that we come from, the one that we are heading to. This way, the circle of life closes with logic and harmony. It does not matter how energetic or intense life may have been; in the end, we find our essence, the purity that we had when we were born.

This ballet was inspired by all those people who continue waiting for somebody who never arrives at the assigned time. This attitude of hope, this desire expanded in time, steady and serene, even though days have passed by and the awaited meeting has not occurred this is to what De Bana dedicates his creation. The choreography reproduces the cyclical character of this waiting. He provides this waiting with a closed and complete sense.

Kelmandy, de Bana´s second work for the Compañía Nacional de Danza, comes to consolidate the future of this young creator within the current choreographic scene.

  • World premiere by Compañía Nacional de Danza at Teatro de Madrid, on March 30th, 2000.

De Bana was inspired once again by the melancholic verses of the poet Neruda again to go deep inside the human being and try to understand his most hidden side: the wild and primitive forces that dominate our impulses. He looks into the response that this innate instinct produces in extreme situations, a response that sometimes may be violent and visceral, but which is, in the end, more true to our nature. Hatred, love, joy and pain are universal feelings that cannot be limited by borders, or bow to convention.

The movement is free and wild, provoking a violent energy that nourishes its desire for freedom. The hidden beauty and the harmony of all that is real and in communion with being impose themselves, catching in a circle the energy that comes from the dance and the music. Energy that will float in the air after the dance has ended. An energy that will remain floating in the air even after the dance has finished.

“Il faut beaucoupd’amour ou de haine pour se liberer d’une obsession”

“You need a lot of love or a lot of hate to free yourself from an obsession”
