Herman Schmerman
In conversation about Herman Schmerman, William Forsythe has said: “I first heard that phrase [‘Herman Schmerman’] used by Steve Martin in the film Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. I think it’s a lovely title that means nothing. The ballet means nothing, too. It’s a piece about dancing that will be a lot of fun."
The first part by Herman Schmerman was created for the New York City Ballet in 1992. Later that same year, a pas de deux created for the Frankfurt Ballet was added, a group that Forsythe himself directed for twenty years.
