Jardí tancat

Nacho Duato

Jardí tancat means closed garden in Catalan. The texts are sung in the same language by the singer Mª del Mar Bonet. These are centuries-old popular texts to which the singer has set music. They are work songs from the land and the sea in which the singing voice proclaims both the hardness of their work and their love affairs. To our ears this music sounds sad and melancholic. However, this is not always the intention, nor does it correspond in all cases to the content of the poems.

To our ears this music sounds sad and melancholic. However, this is not always the intention, nor does it correspond in all cases to the content of the poems.
The cast of three duets offers the choreographer enough possibilities to express moods, whether by the group of dancers, whether by duos or individually. The ballet acquires an atavistic character, as if it were the rain and the wind that determined the movement.
“I knew that my songs are born with rhythm, but when I really met him it was the day that Nacho Duato danced them. When I saw the first choreography, Jardí tancat, I was moved: he had given them another life, they were independent and at the same time linked to me, but with a new heartbeat, a different path.
In Jardí tancat there is one thing that really fascinates me, and it is the treatment of the work songs of Mallorca that I sing a cappella: they are songs that are part of our oldest Mallorcan tradition, but that are no longer sung where they were born. nor for what they were born for, which is work in the fields, because this has changed a lot. There are few corners left in the countryside of Mallorca where the tasks of the peasant world are preserved as they were just forty or fifty years ago. Well, when Nacho choreographed them, he gave them back this role of unique pieces, like precious stones.
I will never tire of saying that these choreographies by Nacho Duato have been one of the most important artistic gifts they have ever given me. “I think they are one of those things that go hand in hand with the deepest emotions, and that are so difficult to explain with words.”
Thanks, Nacho
