Maktub-portada

Having entered the world of choreography using professional dancers – his colleagues at the Compañía Nacional de Danza – it is now Patrick de Bana’s turn to take up the challenge of creating a piece for young dancers who are still undergoing their training. The results is a fresh choreographic work which is full of vibrant colour.
De Bana places the focus of his basic content on Zingaro gypsy culture. A wedding: a joyous occasion, full of merriment and movement, but, at the same time, with the unmistakeable mark of the inevitable. Young people do not marry out of their own free will; their union has been set since the the day they were born: Maktûb, “That which is written”.
With his use of Arabic – Andalusian music from the 10th, 11th and 12th Centuries combined with a modern choreographic language, Patrick de Bana remains true to his basic working principles: the expression of age old values in modern language.
