35th Anniversary

Gala CND 35 anniversary - José Carlos Martínez - 2011/2015

The CND has just turned 35 and we have celebrated its birthday with a triple programme within the Canal Theatre season (Teatros de Canal), whose third edition was devoted to two great figures in the world of dance: María de Ávila, director of the national ballets 1983-1987 and Tony Fabre, former director of CND2. The CND has been through many different phases in its history. To reflect that, two parallel exhibitions were organised: a stage costume exhibit, with figurines from all the different periods, and a poster exhibition, revealing the evolution of the company’s image since 1979. The CND’s 35-year history was reviewed in a chat between the company’s current director, José Carlos Martínez, and its first director, Víctor Ullate.

María de Ávila and Tony Fabre’s Tribute Galas

CND - Gala 35 aniversario CND - Homenaje Maria de Ávila
In October 2014, to celebrate our 35th anniversary, we offered two different programs -“Classics of today (…from Petisa to Forsythe)” and “Do you want to dance with us? (Forsythe, Ek, Naharin)”. With them, we wanted to celebrate not just our 35 years, but also our dancers’ versatility and the wideness of our repertory, both goals of the project of José Carlos Martínez’s, Artistic Director of the Company.

Renaming of the rehearsal rooms: María de Ávila and Tony Fabre

Renaming of the rehearsal rooms: María de Ávila and Tony FabreApart from the two tribute galas for these two dance figures carried out during our 35th anniversary celebrations, in the CND we wanted to make their legacy live generation after generation by renaming the two rehearsal rooms in our headquarters after María de Ávila and Tony Fabre, respectively. They were simple ceremonies in which we counted on their relatives’ presence, as well as on the one of the people closest to the Company. Both our Artistic Director, José Carlos Martínez, and the closest relatives of the honorees said some moving words, recalling the permanent mark left by them in the national artistic heritage. Moreover, in the case of María de Ávila, Ana Isabel Elvira Esteban, author of a thesis on her, made a trully touching review on her life and work. Finally, after uncovering the plaques with new names on them, the persons attending enjoyed a nice aperitif in honour of this figures.

Costume Exhibition

Costume Exhibition at the Teatros del Canal Red RoomApart from enjoying the versatility and quality of the CND’s dancers, the people who came to watch any of our performances, either the ones of the classical and contemporary programs -“Classics of today (…from Petipa to Forsythe)” and “Do you want to dance with us? (Forsythe, Ek, Naharin)”-, or the tribute galas, had the opportunity to admire one of the Company’s most precious assets: its costumes. Dozens of mannequins surrounded the Teatros del Canal Red Room and showed the wonderful tutus and garments used in the Company’s performances throughout these 35 years and signed by renowned Spanish designers, such as Devota & Lomba, David Delfín or Francis Montesinos.
