Compañía Nacional de Danza

Compañía Nacional de Danza was founded in 1979 under the name of Ballet Nacional de España Clásico, being its first Director Víctor Ullate. His successors in the post were María de Ávila and the extraordinary Russian ballerina Maya Plisétskaya, until, in 1990, Nacho Duato was named Artistic Director of the company.
Nacho Duato’s appointment brought innovative change to the history of the company. Until 2010, he contributed fortyfive works as a choreographer, praised by critics worldwide.
After one year under the direction of Hervé Palito, José Carlos Martínez was appointed as the new Director of Compañía Nacional de Danza. The Principal Dancer from the Paris Opera Ballet took office on September 1st, 2011.
The project José Carlos Martínez has for the Compañía Nacional de Danza is to encourage and make the art of dance more well known, along with his repertory in the ample sense, ranging from classical and neoclassical ballet to modern choreographic language, embracing both new Spanish and international creation, drawing in new audiences and boosting its national and international projection within a setting of full artistic and creational freedom.

World premiere, on August 4th 2008, at the Joyce Theate in NY, by the Hubbard Street Dance Co, Chicago.
Premiere by Compañía Nacional de Danza on January 18th, 2012 at Teatro de la Zarzuela, Madrid (Spain).

It is a work with great visual richness that envelopes its dynamism within conceptual art. Extremely Close drives us into an elegant world in movement which changes continuosly. Using the constant piano beat of Phillip Glass and Dustin O’Halloran as its main pillar, Cerrudo creates this work for eight dancers that gradually slows down until dragging us into a completely minimalist atmosphere.

Alejandro Cerrudo

Duration: 44 minutes

World premiere by Contemporary Cuban Dance Co. on December 4th, 2009 at Sala García Lorca from Gran Teatro de La Habana (Cuba).
Premiere by Compañía Nacional de Danza on May 16th, 2014 at Teatro Central de Sevilla (Spain).

Casi-Casa starts from three very common objects present in every household: a stove, a rocking chair and a door. These three objects are always on the stage and around them happen everyday things which are recognisable for every person. But also new elements start to arise, elements that will rouse the audience's interest.
"I watch a lot of film and theater. And look at a lot of art. But what's important to me most is reading the newspaper, watching my children, watching animals move in the park, watching the traffic, things that are not meant to be seen. Social staging, as such, is very rich".

Mats Ek
