Ema Jovanovich

She studied dance at the National School of Belgrade and, later, with Marika Besobrasova, at the Academie de Danse Classique Princesse Grace de Monte Carlo, finally graduating in classical dance at the Hamburg School of Ballet.

En 1991, she was invited by American ballet director and choreographer John Neumeier to join the Hamburg State Ballet as dancer, where she stood out for her parts as soloist and principle dancer in ballets such as The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Mahler Symphonies, Romeo and Juliette, Lady of the Camellias and The Nutcracker, among others. Neumeier created original parts for her, such as Ravel Trilogy, Odysee, Bernstein Dances and Udine. During this period, she worked with Mats Ek, Lar Lubovitch, Ivan Liska, Kevin Haigen and the prestigious ballet teacher, Irina Jacobson.

In 1998, she joined the Compañía Nacional de Danza, under the directorship of Nacho Duato ane where she danced most of the company’s repertoire, such as Jardi Tancat, Por Vos Muero, Duende, White Darkness, Remansos, Self, Romeo and Juliette or  Tabulae.  She also took the opportunity of working with choreographers such as Ohad Naharin, Mats Ek, Jiri Kylian, Orjan Andersson, William Forsythe, Walter Cammertoni and Nicolo Fonte.

In 2008, she started working as freelance dancer for a variety of International projects and as guest teacher and choreographer for a range of European companies. From 2009 to 2013, she worked for the education and dance department of the British Council in Madrid. In 2018, she took a ballet teaching post in the European School of Ballet in Amsterdam (previously the Dutch National Trainee Programme) under the directorship of Jean Yves Esquerre. There, she worked as assistant to choreographers such as Gioconda Barbuto, Jorma Elo, Jean Yves Esquerre and Olivier Wecxsteen, among others.

She holds a higher degree in Sociology from the UK’s Open University and possesses a Masters in Professional Education from the Francisco de Vitoria University (Madrid).
